March 13th – Holi

Do you want to add some colour to your life? Perhaps you need a Holi-day.  Holi is the great Hindu spring festival which celebrates the victory of good over evil and the end of winter.

Several legends surrounding Holi

Like many festivals, it starts with a bonfire around which people gather to pray to be delivered from evil thoughts. The next morning is a cornucopia of cheer when young and old throw coloured powder or water at each other. There are several legends surrounding the origin of Holi, one explains the concentration of colour in the celebrations and concerns Krishna.

Due to being poisoned as a baby, Krishna had dark blue skin as he reached manhood he worried this would make him unattractive to his beloved Radha. His mother suggested he approach Radha and colour her face. Krishna did so, and Radha and Krishna became a couple. The colouring of Radha’s face is commemorated by the dye throwing aspect of Holi.

Of course, there are other aspects to the festival including music, as well as food and drink (since some of the drinks are intoxicating things get quite lively). Later in the day, when heads are a bit clearer, people don their best clothes to visit family and friends to reinvigorate their relationship.
