During this month in 1969 the astronauts on board Apollo 10 were having an unusual conversation. They could hear music and it didn’t seem to be coming from their spacecraft Rather the strange sounds seemed to be coming from the dark side of the Moon (no, not the album by Pink Floyd).{copytag:[611]:copytag}
The noises started when the capsule was on a trip around the Moon and out of range of earth. The astronauts were confused and discussed whether they should mention the strange sounds to NASA or if such a revelation would get them removed from the space programme.
Apollo 11 also heard music from the Moon
So, what caused the peculiar pandemonium? It has been suggested radio interference caused by a magnetic field or the Moon’s atmosphere was the source, but the Moon lacks the atmosphere to cause these noises and it has no magnetic field. Another suggestion was that the sound was created by interference between the Lunar Module's and Command Module's radios. Whatever made the noises Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden told the Science Channel program: "The Apollo 10 crew was very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing. Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there.” In contrast, Apollo 11 pilot, Michael Collins, says he also heard the noises when flying around the Moon, but was informed by engineers that it was simply radio interference.
