So what are Mediums? No, I am not referring to the dimensions of size 14 clothes, or how much coffee you get in a cup. I am talking about the ability of certain people, to interact with spirits.
And the medium’s job is to help communication between spirits and non-mediums, in effect acting like a psychic telephone exchange, although how they accomplish this does vary.
One method involves mediums speaking to spirits and then relaying what they hear. The other type is more unusual and dramatic; the medium or ‘channeler’ goes into a trance, or "leaves their body". He or she becomes "possessed" by a specific spirit, who then talks through them. As the spirit takes over, the medium's voice may change completely. The spirit answers the questions of those in its presence or offers spiritual knowledge.
Whist such information is usual conveyed orally some mediums favour writing the answer down, this is known as psychography or automatic writing. A widely known channeler of this variety is J.Z. Knight who claims to channel the spirit of Ramtha. Others claim to channel spirits from the future, ascended masters, or in the case of the Brahma Kumaris - God.
Witch of Endor
The role of the medium is an ancient one and attempts to communicate with spirits have been documented back to early human history. A story in the Old Testament from the First Book of Samuel relates the story of the Witch of Endor, who raised the spirit of the prophet Samuel to allow King Saul to ask him about a coming battle.
Mediumship grew in popularity in the 19th-century in both the USA and UK due to the rise of Spiritualism as a religious movement. Spiritualism in its modern form, dates from 1848 and the practices of the Fox Sisters. At this time Physical Mediumship was the most popular form and this often involved manifestations such as loud noises, voices, the appearance of objects from nowhere, levitation and materialized spirit bodies. It was claimed to be achieved by using the energy or ectoplasm released by a medium.
After the exposure of fraudulent mediums mediumship fell into disrepute. Yet practice continued among a diehard group of people who believed that the dead could be contacted. From the 1930s through the 1990s Mental Mediumship or channelling became important; this is communication of spirits with a medium by telepathy. The medium mentally hears, sees, or feels the spirit message.
As channelling grew in popularity books by channelers who claimed to relate the wisdom of teacher-spirits became best-sellers amongst believers.
In Britain, the Society for Psychical Research investigated mediumship in the Scole Experiment - a series of séances that took place between 1993–98 in the presence of the researchers David Fontana, Arthur Ellison and Montague Keen. This study has produced photographs, audio recordings and physical objects which appeared in the dark séance room, however, no night vision apparatus was allowed which has cast doubts on the evidence the study produced.
In the US the VERITAS project tested the idea that a person’s consciousness survives physical death. VERITAS researchers have claimed experiments were indicative of survival but do not yet provide conclusive proof. The question is, can science ever really hope confirm the existence of an afterlife? Well, according Professor Brian Cox, it can’t but...we are talking about an area here which is very subtle, and is certainly NOT mathematically based!
